do you hubbub?

OK gang, that’s some great feedback.  I hope you don’t mind, but I want to try just one more on you.  The idea of the site remains the same of course.  It is a central space to get involved in great dialogue over great ideas.  The medium will be visually rich with sims and simspaces etc.  We have come up with the name hubbubclub.com. Over to you again.

To be honest the name doesn’t very well promote intelligent discussion. Not sure how I can say it any other way. As someone said previously, keep it simple and maybe steer a little from the rhyme. Am interested to see what come of this all!

Akkk. Sorry, ’tis my first response. And Sims, puhleeze. I know TSK loves ‘em, and I am an Andrew fan, but… Take a moment and read John Maeda’s book on the Laws of Simplicity - and the 37Signals book, Getting Real. Make the ability to converse in whatever media format as simple as possible. And remember you are attempting to communicate with all the Myers-Briggs types - rather than one or two of the “E” subsets.

    My two cents, Canadian.

  3. Derek on January 31st, 2007 11:03 am

I don’t like it either. Shapevine was much better.

I think Bill has a point in that not everyone has computers that can run with graphically rich sites. I for one do not use windows and while I would have loved to check out the virtual church experiment conducted in the UK but could not access it as it was geared primarily for windows machines. People on slower connections could also be excluded.

Sims would be fun in some ways, but maybe it would be simpler to set up a cafe in second life? There are already virtual churches there. They look a lot like your average attractional church. A whole virtual mission field! However, as a linux user, I could not access much of the site so didn’t bother with it.

I prefer shapevine to hubbubclub too.

I like hubbubclub less than shapevine.

I came up with one: verbspace. It’s not registered.

  6. Dave DeVries on January 31st, 2007 12:19 pm

I don’t like hubbubclub at all.

When I looked it up at thefreedictionary.com, it means: “loud confused noise from many sources.” I doubt I would choose to be part of something like that.

The history of the word is “from a Celtic source, which is probably related to ‘ub ub ubub,’ a Scots Gaelic interjection expressing contempt.” Again, I doubt that I would want to promote contempt - not for the church, for Jesus, or for the mission.

One more thought - when I googled “shapevine” - it led me to rarekungfumovies.com. Interesting…

I’m sure whatever the Spirit leads you to call it - it will benefit the kingdom! Keep pressing on!

Alan…neither name rings my Colorado chimes. What about “Futurespace” or “Futuretalk” or “Futureshare” or “Journeytalk” or “Get down & get going!” or your turn……. I will welcome the site. Thanks for asking for input.

  8. Bill Kinnon on January 31st, 2007 1:57 pm

One of my favourite band names (from South Africa no less) was Friends First. Their drummer, Lloyd Martin pastored a church just outside of Alex called Duduza, the Zulu word for Encouragement. I love names that paint pictures - that have onomatopoeic resonance - that can also stand the test of time.

  9. Rodney Olsen on January 31st, 2007 3:19 pm

I might grow to like it …… but I don’t think so. :)

  10. Alan Hirsch on January 31st, 2007 3:46 pm

Bill, yeah like google, tucows, or yahoo?? :-) Sometimes a inventive word imposes itself on the culture and becomes part of it. I think that’s what hubbubclub can do.

  11. jerry on January 31st, 2007 3:56 pm

    dont like it

seth godin says a simple made up word is best

but I dont like that one

  12. Derek on January 31st, 2007 6:27 pm

Name Generator - There’s actually some decent stuff up here. On a second note, I had an idea for a similar site called Propel. At the time the propel.tv domain was available. Probably not now…

  13. Derek on January 31st, 2007 6:31 pm

How about a Biblical name? Like Areopagus or Sychar (after the well in John 4Open Link in New Window). They were both gathering places for the exchange of ideas….

  14. douglas molgaard on January 31st, 2007 6:50 pm

Sure I will hubbub. Can I have coffee with that?

  15. Gary on January 31st, 2007 6:53 pm

sweet!!! I like both, can we do both??

  16. douglas molgaard on January 31st, 2007 7:05 pm

Hubbub is an Instant Messenger that makes use of various song snippets to give you an awareness of your friends and colleagues.

    How about
Neoera Cafe (Neo = new - Era = time. New Time

  17. Celtic Son on January 31st, 2007 7:50 pm

    Hi Alan,

I just love the fact that someone other than me is quoting Celtic sources… especially that ‘ub ub ubub,’ is a Scots Gaelic interjection expressing contempt…

I think I heard it expressed at closing time in the pub! - what about the “pub-ub-ub-ubub-club” ;-)

  18. Neal Taylor on January 31st, 2007 8:27 pm

I used Derek’s link to the name generator and it came up with thoughtvine - and yes the domain is available!

  19. Dion Peachey on February 1st, 2007 2:41 pm

I like shapevine much better. Even spins off of “the shaping of things to come.” Thanks again to you and Deb both for the conference in Long Beach. We were already sharing the ideas of social set theory with some friends from Costa Rica tonight and they were commenting on how it is a major paradigm shift. I happen to think it is rather a new paradigm altogether compared to where the church is today. It sounds like shapevine will help shape the paradigm as it unfolds.

  20. Digger on February 1st, 2007 3:13 pm

I’m not a big fan, and also, its too much like the name of Mark Sayers’ project thing he’s doing throgh Tabor.

  21. D.G. Hollums on February 1st, 2007 4:48 pm

I wonder if there is anything in Latin, Greek, etc.. that would bring more brainstorming? Just wondering out loud. Thanks!

  22. Josh on February 1st, 2007 5:26 pm

i must say hubbubclub, sounds to much like a brand of chewing gum here in Austrlia

    “vigneto” is italian for grapevine

so there’s my 2 cents worth

  23. Deebs on February 1st, 2007 7:19 pm

    what about:

    “elephantsshoes.com”

    - thinking for travellers in a big world

  24. Alan Hirsch on February 2nd, 2007 3:53 am

what about ‘fourthworld’ then you negative bunch of whingers! :-)

  25. Derek on February 2nd, 2007 6:02 am

Fourthworld? Really? Argh. What’s the reasoning behind this one? And what was the reasoning behind leaving shapevine? I don’t get it. A lot of people liked shapevine.

  26. Bill Kinnon on February 2nd, 2007 6:45 am

Based on Alan’s comment, might I suggest askawhinja - quite frankly, the site could be called spudnet and still be effective if the story telling is engaging and accessible. I would be at least as much or even more concerned with the design and ease of use of the site than what it is called at this stage. Fourthworld sounds like a bad Kevin Costner flick - but only if you asked this whinger.

  27. grace on February 2nd, 2007 8:42 am

    I like spudnet.

  28. Alan Hirsch on February 2nd, 2007 8:43 am

    hehehe :-)

  29. Derek on February 2nd, 2007 11:57 am

I’m beginning to think Alan’s pulling a fast one on us….

  30. Alan Hirsch on February 2nd, 2007 4:48 pm

    You think Derek? :-)

Nah, I am really trying to find a good name. thoughtspuds is coming to mind.

  31. Celtic Son on February 2nd, 2007 6:04 pm

    “Thoughtspuds”? If Alan’s pulling something I don’t think it’s a FAST one!

    Since ibinawhinja… here’s some suggestions;

thinPLACE - a site where the separation between the kingdoms of heaven and earth is “thin”

fishNET - sounds a bit kinky perhaps, but it does relate to “fishers of men” and network

fruitMARKET - a place to meet and discuss the fruits of our labours

kingCOM - a space for kingdom communications

fingalsCAVE- a space with strangely resonating echoes

    ENYGMA - mystery abounds

reFLECT - to flect yet again

    X-PRES - the prior president

    OK - I’m getting delusional…

    A Celtic Son

  32. Deebs on February 2nd, 2007 7:24 pm

    ok:

    1.what’s a sim/simspace?

    2. seeing as no-one agrees it has to be a conglomerant:

    shapelyspudhub.com
    potatovine.com
    shapelytubers.com
    centrespud.com
    poteenbubble.com
    potentpotatoes.com
    postulatingpotatoes.com

    mmmm… too many p’s

  33. Neal Taylor on February 2nd, 2007 8:45 pm

“postulatingpotatoes.com” LOL, sorry that is very funny. I can just see Mr Potatohead now….

  34. Derek on February 2nd, 2007 9:21 pm

    Heh. Potatoes.
    thotpotato.com
    thoughtpotato.com
    spudvine.com
    potatoheads.com
    thoughtharvest.com
    ideaharvest.com
    wellspring.tv

    It’s useless, I think.

  35. brad on February 3rd, 2007 5:45 am

    tubertalk …

  36. PeggyBrown on February 4th, 2007 10:29 am

how about something viral? like inFLUence.com

I just couldn’t come up with something with sneeze in it that didn’t gross me out…I have young sons.

  37. Matt Tew on February 4th, 2007 3:59 pm

    no no no.

You were on to something. Now you’ve drifted into some weird 90’s tangent. Perhaps your age is catching up to you? ;)

This sounds like the stuff of the dot com crash era. Fancy technical concept that sounds cool in concept, but is lousy in reality.

Sims and avatars are for places where you want pretend to be something that you’re not. Hardly a great foundation for shaping the direction of the missional church?

Keep it simple. Keep it usable.

  38. Bob Carder on February 4th, 2007 6:46 pm

    So I’m nuts, I love Hub-bub!

Talk about pulling us in! Hubbub is it. I love hubbub and Alan, don’t listen to the straight laced and bound up non hub-bubbers!

Who said, the name doesn’t promote intellectual discussion? Intellectual? Who can say that what intellectuals write is actually intellectual? Do people really write intellectually and know that it is intellectual? Since when is that the goal of life? And, since when is that not filled with pride. So what, why is it complicated anyway? Missional is hubbub! Are we too intelligent to see it? I see it and I’m not all that smart! Does that help me any?

It sounds like a bunch of hubbubbing to me.

If hubbub is non intellectual let’s do it Alan. We have tried the intellectual man-thing and failed! Let’s hubbub until we get into what it means to hubbub.

Hubbubbing is in….Intellectualizing is out. Why do the smart people try to make it intellectual anyway? Why can’t the stupid have a chance at life? Keep it simple -smarty pants! That’s Jesus! Any other questions? Cut the intellectual *** because all that does is make me want to drink a beer and then throw it up.

  39. Matt Tew on February 4th, 2007 10:09 pm

And just how old are you Bob? Seems like Alan is not the only one showing his age ;)

On a side note - Condolances on the loss of your brother Bob.

  40. Bob Carder on February 5th, 2007 3:57 am

Matt - It seems that I’m giving it away. I turned 49 on the 31st of Jan. While my body is that old, I am trying to think like you younger guys. So now you know that I yam what I yam!

    Thanks for your kind condolances.

I’m still wondering why Alan hasn’t knocked me off my block on this blogspot. He has extended me alott of grace.

You are not prejudice against the elderly are you?

  41. brad on February 5th, 2007 6:09 am

and to some of us who are … ahem … a bit older, we may remember the emergence of “hubba bubba bubblegum” around the same time that disco reached it’s apogee and prepared to burst its own bubble. so, if hubbub is a hidden reference to bubble gum, that gives us something to chew on. but hey, whatever it ends up being called, seems it will be some vigorous theo-practition-interaction. a good thing …

  42. Matt Tew on February 5th, 2007 8:38 am

No bias towards the ‘elderly’. No, not at all.

The fact that you are blogging, Bob, gives you a great head start over your peers. Now just learn some healthy cynicism towards life, and you’ll fit in with the rest of us GenXers

  43. Alan Hirsch on February 5th, 2007 1:14 pm

Hey bob, we are around the same age. I reckon the young guys need us. Stick around baby.

And OK OK, we get the message–you are all uncool out-of-touch churchy types who don’t like hubbubclub.com. So we are leaning towards shapevine.com. :-)

Seriously, thanks for all the feedback.

  44. Bec on February 7th, 2007 11:52 pm

intellectual being beyond baby noises which is what I thought of (after the bubble gum) when reading the name.

  45. Matt Stone on February 8th, 2007 5:01 pm

Celtic Son suggested, “thinPLACE - a site where the separation between the kingdoms of heaven and earth is thin”.

Sorry to trump you but Thin Places would be the name of our missional forum we’re been running in Sydney for the past 4 years. I posted an update on our last gathering earlier today
    http://mattstone.blogs.com/journeysinbetween/2007/02/post.html

and you are welcome to check out our online forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thinplaces/

    good onya Matt…

but I don’t think your forum is the one that trumps!

    ;-)

A Celtic Son fron not such a thinPLACE

  47. Matt Stone on February 8th, 2007 10:10 pm
