Just want to remind you of our first CommuniCast , featuring Ori Brafman, co-author of one of the hottest selling leadership books on the market — The Starfish and The Spider.
Broadcasting live on June 18 from 8-9 PM CST, this CommuniCast is like a webcast but more engaging and interactive. The cost of the event is $7.95. Simply go to www.shapevine.com and click on the register button. Then visit our site on June 18 just before 8 PM CST, login and watch. No camera needed, just a browser. Also, be prepared to ask Ori questions through live text messaging and participate in other live interactive features such as live polling.
About the book…
If you cut off a spider’s head, it dies; if you cut off a starfish’s leg it grows a new one, and that leg can grow into an entirely new starfish. Traditional top-down organizations are like spiders, but now starfish organizations are changing the face of business and the world.
What’s the hidden power behind the success of Wikipedia, craigslist, and Skype? What do eBay and General Electric have in common with the abolitionist and women’s rights movements? What fundamental choice put General Motors and Toyota on vastly different paths? After five years of ground-breaking research Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom have discovered some unexpected answers, gripping stories, and a tapestry of unlikely connections. The Starfish and the Spider argues that organizations fall into two categories: traditional “spiders,” which have a rigid hierarchy and top-down leadership, and revolutionary “starfish,” which rely on the power of peer relationships.
The Starfish and the Spider explores what happens when starfish take on spiders (such as the music industry vs. Napster, Kazaa, and the P2P services that followed). It reveals how established companies and institutions, from IBM to Intuit to the US government, are also learning how to incorporate starfish principles to achieve success. And it will teach you:
- How the Apaches evaded the powerful Spanish army for 200 years
- The power of a simple circle
- The importance of catalysts, who have an uncanny ability to bring people together.
- How the Internet has become a breeding ground for leaderless organizations
- How Alcoholics Anonymous has reached millions of members with only a shared ideology and without a leader
The Starfish and the Spider is the rare book that will change how you understand the world around you. You’ll never see things the same way again.
You can read more about it at www.starfishandspider.com.

Hey Aussies there, remember this is on our Tues! Not Monday. It is US tie that is being advertised.
Alan, will the webcast be available on replay? It’s kind of an awkward time in the UK but I’d love to hear what he has to say if possible? Thanks.
Duncan, I think it might. But check with Lance Ford at lanceford@shapevine.com to check.
I’ve read both ‘The Forgotten Ways’ and ‘The Shaping of Things to Come’. So glad we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, too. Thanks. Your work has hit the mark with us. Just found your site the other day. Wow. Anything you know of happening close to Anderson, In. USA along these lines? Hope so.
Thanks, will do
Alan, I love the idea of Shapevine…however, isn’t there a way to create these type of webinars for free? With so many platforms for the free exchange of ideas, I’d love to see the Church create one of her own that will reach the masses.
Joe, the problem is that the development of that site has cost us around $40k so far. Someone has to pay for the development of the software and the admin, speakers, etc. $5 ain’t so much to pay for excellent engagement with key thinkers and practitioners. Surely?
