are you a lefty or a righty?
THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test … do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. If this is right, I am a ‘righty’ myself, but I can also see the anti-clockwise if I try, and so I must be a swinger.
Left brain functions
- uses logic
- detail oriented
- facts rule
- words and language
- present and past
- math and science
- can comprehend
- knowing
- acknowledges
- order/pattern perception
- knows object name
- reality based
- forms strategies
- practical
- safe
Right brain functions
- uses feeling
- “big picture” oriented
- imagination rules
- symbols and images
- present and future
- philosophy & religion
- can “get it” (i.e. meaning)
- believes
- appreciates
- spatial perception
- knows object function
- fantasy based
- presents possibilities
- impetuous
- risk taking

Clockwise for me… I can’t see it any other way. How weird!
All the adjectives sum me up pretty well too.
“I must be a swinger.” … Allan what a confession! This may be taking incarnational mission to far!
I’ve always known I was ‘Righty’ (or at least match up most strongly with right brain lists like the one above) but it’s a cool animation. Now if they could just come up with a similar test to see if someone is an ‘inny’ or an ‘outy’ we could rally save some time on that area of curial research. Seriously though - this has me wondering if there is any good information out there on how right and left brain orientation effects ministry, church preference and all that jazz. I’m off to Goggle…
Definitely a right-sider for me (makes up for this “sinister” left-handedness I was cursed with!)
its fun trying to convince people who only see it one way. they think you’re crazy.
Not that kind of swinger James! Naughty.
So glad to hear it, just all that talk from you about entering every sub-culture had me worried!
O.K., O.K. I am kind of feeling like the odd man out here! I seem to only be able to see the dancer moving counter-clockwise (a lefty). Oddly, I am left handed also. However prior to being an incomplete quadriplegic I was right handed (more or less as I tended to be a little of both).
Ben, that idea of how this affects ministry/life intrigued me also in thought. I would love to hear what you found out!
Erik, I would guess that most of our, overly modernistic, approaches to training and ministry would be left-brained–not that there is anything wrong with that!
When I first looked at her she was moving counter-clockwise. I looked away to read the text and when I looked back she was moving clockwise. I had no problem switching her back to counter-clockwise, but it didn’t take long for my brain switch her back to clockwise. Always knew I was a little schizo.
Clockwise - which surprised me - then counter and back again. That thing’s a trip.
Wow. Not sure what you thought about the wildly popular book Blue Like Jazz, but as I read through your website/blog I have to believe you and your readers/students would enjoy the new book: Brown Like Coffee. I found it at brownlikecoffee.com
I would love for you to read it and review/critique here on your site. Thanks
Erik -
short answer - Not a lot specifically about how this affects ministry/life. Some that did not reference church but looked at culture, education, and marketing/sales were interesting.
Long Answer - I found one article re:church that gave me more that a few moments thought. I wrote about it on my blog (there are links to the original article there as well) http://holisticliberalchristian.blogspot.com/2008/01/heading-in-right-direction.html
Alan,
I am reading your book now. I heard about you from a guy named Tom Ward Jr. in Delaware. I went to school with him years ago.
I can only see the dancer clockwise, though my wife doesn’t want me taking a further look.
Vinnie C.
Eric…I’m with you, bro…counter-clockwise dancer for me. I couldn’t get her to change direction, but that may be because I have a headache at the moment
Interestingly enough, I am a bit ambidextrous … well, you all know that I just don’t fit into any “normal” model anywhere, so it shouldn’t surprise you that I resonate with many of the right brained descriptions…
Now Pegs, we know that you are not normal. but we still love you. And Vinnie, yes, the dancer is a bit riske. But its only a silhouette. Tell your wife to chill out.
this is strange… i see it going anti-clockwise and can’t shake it… but, early in 2007 i did a hermann brain dominance indicator (HBDI) test which placed in me majorly the yellow quandrant which supposedly means my thinking preference is creative/big picture etc… weird. The HBDI is a good one to check out as it is fairly simple and give a bit more definition than left vs. right idea. the HBDI points out that everyone can actually (and should aim to) function well in each quandrant - it just takes a training ourselves and practice.
erik - don’t worry about being a lefty; everyone on here probably thinks it cool to be a righty - they’re really just sheep who want to conform!
Rick, I’m the exact same as you. First off, counterclockwise. I couldn’t force myself to see it another way and got suspicious, then I started reading the right brained description and she started going clockwise.
I start reading the comments and she started going counterclockwise.
Now, I’m curious how a picture of a man would affect the perceived turning.
Or is the picture different for each person too?
Thanks for the luv, Al!
TFW Tribe rocks!
I need to see a shrink. I can see it both ways but it seems to switch directions while I’m watching.
Ok, so you really can see her going other ways? I see clockwise only. Amazing.
