mandela on leadership
I have to admit that I totally love Nelson Mandela.
I do believe he is the greatest leader alive today and a remarkable example of grace. Time magazine recently did an article on him and his view of leadership. Interestingly he says that these are not principles but tactics. He is a man of principles but in terms of leadership he says it is all about tactics. Here are his eight principles…
- Courage is not the absence of fear — it’s inspiring others to move beyond it
- Lead from the front — but don’t leave your base behind
- Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front
- Know your enemy — and learn about his favorite sport
- Keep your friends close — and your rivals even closer
- Appearances matter — and remember to smile
- Nothing is black or white
- Quitting is leading too

BTW sorry that I have been tardy with posting at the moment. I am very, very, busy.

I enjoy the list. The last one is intriguing and I agree with it. I dont know about your experience but our denomination is getting ready to go through a pastoral retirement exodus. Probably should have happened 10 years ago, but a lot of pastors dont know how to end well. So, quitting can be good leadership if you do it well and dont go out in a final sermon where you yell at everyone (which happens all too often).

Man I love this blog but I gotta say that background image makes it a painful experience to read the first part of your posts.
I love Nelson too. (Understatement.) Thanks.
Aaron, I know. I wish I knew html to change font. but what you can do is enlarge the font. It makes reading easier.

the article section on “quitting is leading, too” is very apropos. Perhaps part of the most original content it offered.
