the ocean of god
“No man is satisfied in a swimming bath; he knocks his knees and elbows against its sides; he wants the sea. So with man’s soul, he hungers and thirsts for the ocean, for God; God infinite and Other, different to man, yet working in man…” - Baron F. Von Hugel

This quote, joyfully, reminds me of times surfing. Though I’d never go alone (buddy system), there were times when I would drift from the crowd and drop in on a lonely wave all by myself. The exhilaration and speed were amazing! And whether I would wipe out or come out on top, the experience typically came with a deeper respect for where I was. Surfing afforded me the experience of, often, being humbled due to the majesty, danger, and demand for respect that describes the ocean. God always met me in the water, no matter who I was with at the time nor no matter who I happened to run into. Alan, thanks for the quote; I haven’t been surfing in about four years now. I very much look forward to returning to it!
